Got Your Back October 8, 2014

12 For you shall not go out in haste,
and you shall not go in flight,
for the Lord will go before you,
and the God of Israel will be your rear guard.
Isaiah 52:12 ESV

I am amused at what sayings or tag lines catch on at times.  "Got Milk"  "Stay Calm and (fill in the blank) On"  "Where's the Beef?"  To name a few.  One that I found particularly amusing was "I got your back."  Not so much because of the expression, but because of the situations in which it was used.

"I am going to complain to the manager about our poor service."
"Go ahead.  I got your back."

"This sweater stretched out way too much when I washed it.  I need to return it."
"I would.  I got your back."

"Too many dropped calls.  I am going to call their customer service line."
"I got your back."

As if we need back up to express our displeasure or return an item to the store.

Sure, "I got your back" is necessary if entering a burning building or responding to a 9-1-1 call.  But in a retail establishment or on the phone with Stacy from Verizon?

However in life, we to need someone to cover not just our backs, but our fronts too.  Isaiah reminds us that God has our front and our back.  We needn't worry about what is before us, or what is lurking behind us.

Haste, hurry, and hectic need not be a part of the believer's vocabulary.  If we act when God says to act, He has our front and our rear.  No need to run around, arms flailing Chicken-Little style.

If we have accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, He is both our vanguard and our rear guard.  Nothing gets to us unless it gets through Him first.  And since He desires the best for each of us, He will not allow anything to pass through Him to us unless it is in our best interest.
