14 By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.
2 Timothy 1:14 ESV
Verve 14 of the first chapter of 2 Timothy comes on the heels of one of Paul's four-verse sentences with multiple pronouns, prepositional phrases, and conjunctions. For this layman, the "good deposit" reference was unclear, so I headed to the commentaries.
Even among those more learned than me, there was a lack of consensus/clarity as to what was the "good deposit". But the more common explanation was the "good deposit" is the Gospel message. And that was a sobering thought.
God has left the message of His peace, salvation, and eternal life up to, as the Hulk would say, "Puny humans."
Distribution of Bibles- puny humans. Sending of missionaries- puny humans. Sharing of the Gospel message- puny humans.
The Truth which God has entrusted to us has eternal consequences. What a sobering thought. Whether a stranger spends eternity praising God or writhing in agony may depend on a Bible purchased by your gift to the Gideons. A wasted life of despair or a purpose-filled life might hinge on your workplace invite to church.
God has entrusted the Gospel message to each of His children whether we like it or not. It is not up to the preachers or deacons or evangelists. Each individual believer has a responsibility to share. Our obedience, or lack of, can have eternal ramifications.
That truth could be overwhelming unless you reread the first part of verse 14. "By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us. . ." God has not left us unequipped. He indwells each believer to empower and guide. He has equipped His elect. We have but to call on the Holy Spirit and He will answer.

Where is Hope October 29, 2014
11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11 ESV
"Freshman gunman
Jaylen Fryberg burst into Marysville-Pilchuck High School Friday, killed
one classmate and injured four more before turning the gun on himself.
The 14-year-old had been romantically rejected by one of the girls he
shot — and then she started dating one of his cousins, a friend said." --New York Daily News
Fifteen years old. Broken-hearted. Rejected. Lost. It is frightening how often today's headlines trumpet yet another school shooting.
Life is hard. Days can seem long. The dawn can seem distant. Without the hope of Jesus Christ sometimes life is unbearable.

Students shooting other students. Classmates killing classmates. Students shooting teachers. Young people with their whole life ahead of them turned homicidal.
Where was their will to persevere? Where was their desire to overcome? Where was their hope?
"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord,. . .to give you a future and a hope." Through Jesus Christ we have salvation. With Jesus Christ we have a "friend who sticks closer than a brother." Proverbs 18:24 ESV Because of Jesus Christ we have hope.
While my research is thin, I don't remember any information about the school shooters which connected them to a Christian worldview. No strong ties to a church youth group. No mention of their Christian lifestyle.
I am not naive enough to believe that all who profess Christ, attend church, and recite scripture are incapable of such atrocities, but those who do rarely acknowledge Him as Lord and Savior.
To come into His presence on a daily basis gives hope. To spend time in His Word grants peace. Do troubles vanish? Do girlfriends return? Do bullies disappear? No. Life's challenges still exist. But He gives the hope to those who call on His name. He enables them to be "more than conquerors". Romans 8:37 ESV

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged
sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of
marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 ESV

Pupil October 23, 2014
10 Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God!
Let your good Spirit lead me
on level ground!
Psalm 143:10 ESV
"Teach me your will." Not reveal to me. Not write it on the wall. Not impress upon my spirit. But teach.
In Psalm 143:10 David views himself as a student of the Most High. God's pupil.
Perhaps you view yourself as a child of God, or a joint heir, or a sinner saved by grace, which are all true for the Christian. But do you recognize the teacher-pupil relationship you have with your Heavenly Father?
As a 29 year veteran of public schools, the word teach really got my gears turning. What are the components necessary for learning? How do learners learn?
I asked myself, "What are some the basics requirements in most classrooms?
1. Attendance- You have to show up to learn what the teacher has planned. If God kept attendance of your quiet times, church attendance, etc. would you receive a gold star or a letter from the attendance officer?
2. Textbooks- Although textbooks look different from the early McGuffey Readers, most classes require reading of some sort- ebooks, articles, internet sites, etc. For the Christian, the Bible should be the primary text, but there are scores of supplemental texts that can add to the lesson. Spend an afternoon in your local Christian book store and discover the great Christian authors of past and present.
3. Homework- Not all God wants you to learn will happen during the 20, 30, or even 60 minutes of your quiet time each day. Be sensitive to the lessons God is teaching you throughout the day.
4. Tests- YUCK! Learning can only be measured through some sort of assessment. The assurance you have from your Heavenly Headmaster is that you will not be tested over any material or in any situation for which you are not prepared. In 1 Corinthians 10:13, Paul reminds us that God, "will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." God does not set you up for, or rejoice in your mistakes, missteps, or miscalculations.
5. Errors- I am current reading a book that examines the traditional ways we have taught people to learn. Research shows that the more difficult lessons are where the highest level of learning takes place. Because of this, the best learning is accompanied by a certain degree of error. As a Christian, the blood of Jesus Christ has already cleansed us from all mistakes. Sin is forgiven. When you stumble, ask God to strengthen and teach. Don't allow it to defeat you.
5. Graduation- If you have asked Jesus Christ to become your personal Lord and Savior, you are guaranteed a graduation from this school of hard knocks. And what a graduation party He has planned! Singing. Angels. Reunions. And the best thing. . .no more tests, no more heartache, no more tears.
Teach me to do Your will; may I ever remain Your pupil.

Moths and Rust October 22, 2014
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. Matthew 6:19,20 ESV
Yesterday Kristi's truck window was broken and her purse taken. Credit cards- gone. Debit card-gone. Driver's license-gone. Cash-gone. Eternal salvation-untouched. God's love for Kristi-unchanged. God's hand of blessing-unmoved.
Sure house lockes had to be changed. Credit cards cancelled. Police report filed. But at the end of the day, Kristi was safe and we are still "children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ,". Romans 8:16b/17a ESV
The event was disconcerting and troublesome. It was a hassle. An added cost. However our "treasures in heaven" have not been touched, tarnished, or tampered with. Jehovah-Raah still protects. Jehovah Jireh still provides. Jehovah Shammah is still there.
Thank you, God for Kristi's safety. Thank you, God for using this event to draw us closer to you. May we use this event as an opportunity to talk to others about You.

Ultimate Goal October 21, 2014
1 I waited patiently for the Lord;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
2 He drew me up from the pit of destruction,
out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
making my steps secure.
3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and put their trust in the Lord.
Psalm 40:1-3 ESV
I wonder how often prayers are unanswered by God not because of the condition of the supplicant or the object of the supplication, but because the ultimate goal is off the mark.
In the first two verses we see what the Lord did for David. God heard and rescued. David's patience and prayers were rewarded. Why?
Was it so David could live a long, full life? Did God rescue David for David's sake? The answer to that question lies in the last half of verse three. "Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD." That should be the ultimate goal of all our prayers.
"Father, please heal, or don't heal, me from (fill in the blank). Whatever will bring the greatest number of people into your kingdom, that is my prayer."
"God, please protect my job, but if more people will enter heaven as a result of my unemployment, your will, not mine."
These are some scary prayers. David was rescued, but not for David's sake. His deliverance was the catalyst "many" needed to "put their trust in the LORD".
Our earthly suffering might be what God uses to save others from eternal suffering. Thirty years of arthritis might save one, two, or more people from a forever of damnation, if, as Christians, we use this world's suffering to reflect God's grace and mercy.
Ultimately, all that God causes or allows into our lives, good, bad, or ugly, should be a platform for His children to witness to others. Are we willing to trade our temporal for another's eternal?

Small Things October 17, 2014
14 The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him,
and he makes known to them his covenant. Psalm 25:14 ESV
When I googled "names of God" within 0.35 seconds there were "about 155,000,000 results". Needless to say I did not visit each site or look at each image that was associated with my search. But the few I did investigate had several names in common. These included: El Shaddai, Yahweh, Jehovah, Jehovah Jireh, Elohim, Alpha and Omega, Messiah, and I Am.
However Psalm 25:14 reminds us of another important attribute of God. Even though God is Ruler, Master, Savior, Creator, He is still our friend. Friend, companion, confidant, intimate.
Yes, He parts the seas, calms the storms, and created the universe, but He also listens, comforts, and draws along side.
We should never lose our reverence or respect for God. He is Great and Mighty. But we can also invite Him to join us for a morning cup of coffee.
Prayers and supplication. Cry out for comfort. Plead for mercy. But don't neglect conversation. It's okay to just hang out with Yahweh. Bask in His blessings. Kick back in His company.
God is big enough for the universe, but personal enough for friendship.
and he makes known to them his covenant. Psalm 25:14 ESV

It Really Does Work October 16, 2014
11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. Ephesians 6:11-18 ESV
Next week Sunshine Elementary will be having its 150th anniversary celebration. Not only will there be a large turnout of our parents and students, but there are guest speakers from the mayor's office, a congressman's and senator's office, and the superintendent. The media will be there. Lots of attention.
I woke up this morning almost in a panic over a detail I needed to follow up on but at 4:30 a.m. could do nothing about. Very quickly my stomach began to churn. My palms started to sweat. My mind started to race. I was tempted to forgo morning quiet time in an effort to get to school early, get busy with "stuff" in order to hurry the time along until I could address my concern. But that was the carnal side trying to problem solve.
Instead I made myself sit at the desk with an open Bible casting my worry at His feet. The relief was not immediate. It took a real effort on my part to focus my mind on Him, His promises, and His Word. But when I fully committed to allowing Him to calm my fears, the "peace of God, which surpasses all understanding" began to creep in.
He directed me to the passage from Ephesians 6 which lists the armor of God. As I prayed through the scripture He brought to mind how each of the pieces of armor were needed in my current worry battle. He reminded me of Biblical truths, directed my mind to specific Biblical promises, and gave me application wisdom.
Has the original reason for worry disappeared? Not at all. I will still need to follow up later today. Have all thoughts of the issue dissipated? No. My humaness will not allow me to forget, nor should I. If I forget, then I would not address the issue later today. Has my stomach returned to normal? Yes. Has my mind slowed and my palms dried out? Certainly.
Wisdom is the application of knowledge. All the head knowledge of scripture, God's workings, and spiritual warfare are of little use unless applied in the real world to actual struggles.
All praise and thanks to a God who is true to His word and faithful to His children.

God Gave Us a Brain October 14, 2014
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal
of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God,
what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Romans 12:2 ESV
Heart-led v. Head-led.
Can we make Christianity too mystical? Too spiritual? Paul tells his readers that we should renew our minds. Not our spirit. Not our heart. Not our emotions. But our minds. Our intellect.
In the book, The Screwtape Letters, the letter-writing demon, Screwtape, writes to his nephew, "Humans are amphibians--half spirit and half animal."* As such, God expects us to use both sides of our humanity. There will be times when our commonsense should guide and direct our decisions.
Prayer is not required to decide whether to spend money to go see "Hangover III". Meditation is not necessary when determining if lunch alone with an opposite sex colleague is a bad idea.
We are not to be conformed to this world. Our transformation is possible because we not only have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, but because we also have the ability to make good choices based on intellect.
Our minds can help us understand Scripture. Our intellect can help us determine good use of our finances. Our gray matter knows whether that joke should be repeated, or even listened to in the first place.
Many matters call for extended prayer and spiritual discernment. But many others call for just plain, good old fashioned horse sense.

Pick and Choose October 13, 2014
11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11 ESV
Each day Biblegateway.com posts a Verse of the Day. Today's verse was Jeremiah 29:11. Which is a very encouraging verse and most likely "claimed" by Christians and others many times a day. But I wonder how many of those verse claimers hold themselves accountable for verses 12 and 13?
12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. 13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:12,13 ESV
Uh-oh. You mean God's not just going to pour out His blessings while I sit around an do nothing? Manna won't fall from heaven if I am disobedient? I won't be on the receiving end of blessings in "good measure, pressed down, shaken together, (and) running over" when I am living a me-first life?
God's plan for our good, our prosperity, our success are, in large part, tied to the choices we make day in and day out. Salvation is not earned, but after that. . .
When David was disobedient, he was punished. When Samson sinned, the Spirit of God was removed from him. Stubborn Jonah ended up in a great fish.
Yes, God does have plans for peace and a future and hope for His children, but there are requirements, duties, conditions placed on us.

Simple, Not Easy October 11, 2014
For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.
Psalm 62:1 ESV
7:45 a.m. The bell rings and the doors open to the students at Sunshine Elementary. Until 8:00 a.m. when they are released to their classrooms, the Bees (our mascot) are expected to sit in a line with their classmates. Criss-cross, spoons in the bowl and visit quietly with a neighbor. Simple, right? Easy? Not for many.
Sitting becomes sprawling. Sitting mutates into spinning. Sitting is replaced with sliding into a neighbor. ARRRRGGGGHHHHH!
The expectation is simple. The request clear. However, the execution is not so easy for many children.
Psalm 62:1 is one of those simple-but-not easy tasks. Wait for God alone. Rely on God only. God is our exclusive rescuer.
Clear, concise. God alone; not E.F. Hutton. El Shaddai singular; not Pastor Chad. Yahweh exclusively; not the New York Stock Exchange.
Were it only as easy as it is simple. Do we truly want to be at that point in our lives? Do we really believe that God alone can meet all our needs? If so, does our prayer life reflect this belief or do we hedge just a bit?
Me- God you alone are my source for strength, contentment, and all the other stuff I need.
God- Do you really believe that?
Me- Sure. The Bible says it, and I believe it.
God- You sure?
Me- Uh, yeah. I think so.
God- Well, then. What if I took your job?
Me- Er. . .
God- What if I allow cancer to enter your body?
Me- Ummm. . .
God- The stock market took a nasty hit Friday.
Me- Yeah, but. . .
God- "Only Me" sounds easy. You sure you want it put to the test?
Me- Let me get back to you on that.

Double Down October 9, 2014
You shall walk after the Lord your God and fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice, and you shall serve him and hold fast to him.
Deuteronomy 13:4 ESV
15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 14:15 ESV
I generally have two sources for my morning quiet times. One is the Verse of the Day from biblegateway.com and the other is from Daily Strength for Daily Needs. It is interesting these two verses should pop up today as part of my morning devotions.
Both verses speak of service to the Lord and that has been a point of prayer for me these past several days. For the past three years, I have been fairly involved with Ridgecrest's homeless ministry. From serving weekly meals to working with individuals on a variety of needs, I have spend many hours in service to God by helping "the least of these". However, at the current time, the homeless ministry with which I worked is no longer functioning.
While these past few weeks of not having any ministry commitments has been relaxing, my spirit is becoming restless. Both verses today speak of service. To act. To do. To work.
Please pray that God will reveal service opportunities to me and that I will have the wisdom to move in the direction in which He is leading.

Got Your Back October 8, 2014
12 For you shall not go out in haste,
and you shall not go in flight,
for the Lord will go before you,
and the God of Israel will be your rear guard.
Isaiah 52:12 ESV
I am amused at what sayings or tag lines catch on at times. "Got Milk" "Stay Calm and (fill in the blank) On" "Where's the Beef?" To name a few. One that I found particularly amusing was "I got your back." Not so much because of the expression, but because of the situations in which it was used.
"I am going to complain to the manager about our poor service."
"Go ahead. I got your back."
"This sweater stretched out way too much when I washed it. I need to return it."
"I would. I got your back."
"Too many dropped calls. I am going to call their customer service line."
"I got your back."
As if we need back up to express our displeasure or return an item to the store.
Sure, "I got your back" is necessary if entering a burning building or responding to a 9-1-1 call. But in a retail establishment or on the phone with Stacy from Verizon?
However in life, we to need someone to cover not just our backs, but our fronts too. Isaiah reminds us that God has our front and our back. We needn't worry about what is before us, or what is lurking behind us.
Haste, hurry, and hectic need not be a part of the believer's vocabulary. If we act when God says to act, He has our front and our rear. No need to run around, arms flailing Chicken-Little style.
If we have accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, He is both our vanguard and our rear guard. Nothing gets to us unless it gets through Him first. And since He desires the best for each of us, He will not allow anything to pass through Him to us unless it is in our best interest.

Constancy October 7, 2014
6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Galatians 4:6 ESV
Resignation to the Divine Will signifies a cheerful approbation and thankful acceptance of everything that comes from God. It is not enough patiently to submit, but we must thankfully receive and fully approve of everything that, by the order of God's providence, happens to us. For there is no reason why we should be patient, but what is as good and as strong a reason why we should be thankful. Whenever, therefore, you find yourself disposed to uneasiness or murmuring at any thing that is the effect of God's providence over you, you must look upon yourself as denying either the wisdom or goodness of God.
W.M. Law*
The last sentence from Mr. Law's passage is very telling. If we are "disposed to uneasiness or murmuring" at anything God has allowed into our lives, we question God's goodness or wisdom.
I got a promotion. God is good. I lost my job. God is not good.
I am in love. God is good. My wife left me. God doesn't know what He is doing.
My child just graduated college. God is good. My child has cancer. God is mean.
It is not fair to God to give Him credit for wisdom and love during the good times, then question those traits when things start to fall apart. God's constancy is one of the foundational pieces in a Christian's belief system.
A: God is good.
B: All the time.
A: All the time.
B: God is good.
You could substitute any of God's characteristics for "good".
A: God is wise.
B: All the time.

B: God is wise.
A: God is love.
B: All the time.

Isaiah 26:3 October 6, 2014
3 You keep him in perfect peace
whose mind is stayed on you,
because he trusts in you.
Isaiah 26:3 ESV
"Perfect peace." Not just peace, but perfect peace. To a professional worrier that is one of the sweetest promises in the Bible. Perfect peace. The Holy Grail. The .400 season. The Stanley Cup.
I am slowly inching my way toward slaying my worry monsters. I am losing less sleep. The kaleidoscope of butterflies in my gut is much smaller. But peace that is perfect. Not there yet.
As I was pondering this verse and finishing up my morning yogurt, a question inched its way into my mind. What is "perfect peace"? At first blush it would appear to be that it is a peace which is calm, relaxed, well. . . peaceful. But we see in scripture that Christ's life was not always emotionally peaceful. Yet is mind was always stayed on His Father.
Jesus turned over the tables in the temple. He wept when he arrived at the home of Lazarus after Lazarus had died. He prayed so passionately in the Garden of Gethsemane "his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground." Luke 22:44 ESV
Can a person be at peace and weep? Are peace and agonizing prayer compatible?

Expiration Date? October 5, 2014
6 “Seek the Lord while he may be found;
call upon him while he is near;" Isaiah 55:6 ESV
Today's verse implies that there may be a time when people will not be able to access God. That window will be closed. Growing up in a Baptist church, I was taught that after death it was impossible to move from lost to saved, but Isaiah seems to imply that time may be prior to physical death. This new thought sent me to the commentaries. Below are come verses from commentaries that seem to support the idea that we only have a window in which we can accept Christ as Lord and Savior. There is an expiration date on the Holy Spirit's conviction. Or is there?
11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ 12 But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.' Matthew 25:11-12 ESV
2 For he says,
Are these verses speaking only to the after-death experience, or are they warning us that if we continually turn our backs on God we will lose the opportunity for eternal life? If this is the case, it certainly ratchets up the urgency of every witnessing interaction, every evangelism sermon, and every alter call.

“In a favorable time I listened to you,
and in a day of salvation I have helped you.”
and in a day of salvation I have helped you.”
Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.
24 Because I have called and you refused to listen,
have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded,
28 Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer;
they will seek me diligently but will not find me.

October 2, 2014 Duality 3.0 Snare v Safety
The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.
Proverbs 29:25 ESV
More horizontal/vertical comparison. A theme is developing, but not intentionally on my part. These are just the verses that keep coming up in my morning devotional reads.
When I read today's verse it caused me to ponder how the fear of man could "lay a snare". I understand how the fear of may can cause the loss of sleep, the deterioration of health, and the degradation of relationships, but act as a snare?
Here are some ways that might present itself.

Do not flatter yourself that your thoughts are under due control, your
desires properly regulated, or your dispositions subject as they should be
to Christian principle, if your intercourse with others consists mainly of
frivolous gossip, impertinent anecdotes, speculations on the character and
affairs of your neighbors, the repetition of former conversations, or a
discussion of the current petty scandal of society; much less, if you allow
yourself in careless exaggeration on all these points, and that grievous
inattention to exact truth, which is apt to attend the statements of those
whose conversation is made up of these materials.
