It's over. Completed. Concluded. Done. Ended. Finished. After billions of dollars, countless television/radio adds and untold yard signs, the Election of 2012 is over.
There will be many Christians wailing and gnashing their teeth as a result of last night's election results- Obama reelected, the first openly gay senator elected, two states legalizing same sex marriage by popular vote, etc. It will be interesting to see how many of those wailers and teeth-gnashers are willing to follow the Biblical mandate set forth in 1 Timothy 2:1-2. 1 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
As followers of Jesus Christ we need to recall the words of Paul in Romans 13:1.
1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
Those who are frustrated/depressed/concerned/angry about Tuesday night's election results need to realize that we cannot see the whole tapestry God has woven for us as individuals and the world as large. We cannot see what will take place in the next hour of our lives, let alone the next 10 years. God can. He is in control. He truly does "works for the good of those who love him, who are called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28).
Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds Christians God is far wiser, far greater than we can ever hope to be. He is in control.
8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the Lord.
9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts."
The election is done. The president has been elected. Senators chosen. Ballot measures decided. Bitterness and complaining will only alienate those who may need hear God's love and acceptance. Will the Church love and unify or hate and divide. I believe God is much more concerned with how his children will react than who is in the White House.
